The Secret of the Locust Grove: A Long-Buried Murder Case

A Strange Security Guard

Feng Shi is a security guard at Hengchuan XX University. He is responsible for the night shift and due to prolonged lack of sleep, his face appears unhealthy with a greenish-yellow hue.

One night, Feng Shi sat alone in the guard room. In front of him was a monitor displaying surveillance footage of the four main gates of the school.

This gave Feng Shi a sense of security.

As the night grew deeper, Feng Shi sat upright, his eyes fixed on the monitor screen.

He didn't turn on the lights, and the whole room was pitch black.

After midnight, Feng Shi reached out to turn on the table lamp, took out a magazine, and started flipping through it.

After finishing one magazine, he subconsciously glanced at the screen, his eyes widening instantly.

A white pajama was floating motionless outside the school gate. Feng Shi paused for a moment, gathered his courage, and quietly stood up to look out through the window.

It was a girl wearing a white pajama. Strangely, the girl always had her back to the gate.

He opened the door and went out, asking, "Classmate, which department are you from, and why are you standing outside?"

The girl remained silent, still staring stiffly into the darkness in the distance. Then, she slowly turned around and said, "Someone called my name just now." After speaking, she lowered her head and walked through the gate.

Feng Shi watched her figure, feeling that her figure was light, and the pajama seemed empty.

He locked the door and returned to the guard room, absentmindedly flipping through the magazine. As he looked at the unreliable gossip news in the magazine, he thought about the girl more and more, feeling that something was amiss.

Suddenly, he remembered that the girl had seemed to be tiptoeing while walking, and he never saw her face...

In the morning, Feng Shi's colleague Zhu Yu came to take over the shift. He was a shy young man, one year older than Feng Shi.

As Feng Shi left, he noticed that Zhu Yu's hair seemed to have grown a lot overnight.

Feng Shi and Zhu Yu rented a house together, very close to XX University. For Feng Shi, daytime was nighttime, and by the time he woke up, it was already evening.

Feng Shi felt that there was a secret hidden near the school, and he decided to uncover this mystery.

When he arrived at the school gate, Feng Shi saw the lights on in the guard room, but Zhu Yu's shadow was nowhere to be found.

Suddenly, Feng Shi felt someone behind him. He turned around and saw Zhu Yu, causing him to shiver.

The Zhu Yu in front of him appeared to be sleepwalking, standing motionless and then walked away as if in a trance. Feng Shi dared not follow because Zhu Yu was heading towards a patch of wild locust grove.

It was a grove of locust trees where a murder case had taken place three years ago and remained unsolved to this day.

Once, a student entered that grove with a camera and never returned.

According to the student's recollection, as he walked and played in the grove, he suddenly saw a man flying a kite with a child in front. There was no wind that day, yet the kite flew high in the sky without getting entangled in the trees. Interestingly, as they walked on, the man and child disappeared, leaving only the red kite floating alone in the grove. The kite was flying at a low altitude, and he could almost make eye contact with it. At that moment, he felt he could not move forward, and looking down, he almost wet his pants when he realized he had unknowingly walked up a tree.

It was not that the kite was flying low; it was his altitude that had increased.

So, it turns out, those two people were not walking but floating.

The above is the most widely spread strange incident related to that murder case.

Two, Midnight Leap

During the shift change, Feng Shi returned to the guard room and stared straight at the surveillance screen.

The phone rang at 00:10. It rang three times before Feng Shi picked up the receiver.

On the other end of the phone, a girl was crying as she said, "Help... there's someone in my dorm..."

Feng Shi remained calm, "If it's a person, why are you afraid?"

"It's not a person... it's not..." The girl was somewhat incoherent. "Please come quickly, Unit 407, Building 3 in Block 7." Then the call disconnected.

Feng Shi put on his hat and walked out of the guard room, the surroundings unusually quiet.

Unit 407's door was closed. Just as Feng Shi was about to knock on the door, it suddenly swung open, revealing the girl in a white pajama whom he had seen the day before at the school gate.

Apart from this girl, Feng Shi did not see anyone else on the entire floor.

He followed her into Unit 407. The girl told him her name was Tang Jingrui. She said that when she came out to go to the restroom at night, she saw someone flipping over and climbing up the balcony window and then jumping off.

"Why didn't you call the police?" Feng Shi asked.

Tang Jingrui replied, "My boyfriend told me that it's no use reporting such things to the police."

Feng Shi then asked, "Why isn't your boyfriend here with you?"

Tang Jingrui said, "He's out on an internship."

Feng Shi further inquired, "Why are you the only person in this building?"

Tang Jingrui explained, "They went out for sketching today, and I injured my leg, so I took leave."

Feng Shi nodded, smiled at Tang Jingrui, and suddenly sang a theatrical line: "At the sight of a beautiful woman, my heart is troubled and my dreams are broken... the soul leaves..."

Tang Jingrui's expression changed abruptly, and she slammed the door shut with a loud 'bang'.

Once back in the guard room, Feng Shi reviewed all the surveillance footage of Building 7 but found nothing unusual.

In the morning when Zhu Yu came to take over the shift, Feng Shi noticed that Zhu Yu's eyes were even wider, and his hair was even more disheveled.

When Feng Shi returned to his lodging and lay down, he couldn't fall asleep no matter what he tried. He took out his phone and called Tang Jingrui.

When Tang Jingrui answered the phone, she nervously asked, "Who is this?"

Feng Shi replied, "We met last night."

Tang Jingrui asked, "What do you want?"

Feng Shi asked, "How did you meet Zhu Yu?"

Tang Jingrui fell silent.

She then recounted an incident that she and Zhu Yu had experienced together.

Zhu Yu was madly in love with Tang Jingrui, but how could a mere security guard be good enough for her? She told her boyfriend, Hua Zhikang, about this.

Hua Zhikang instructed Tang Jingrui to arrange for Zhu Yu to meet her at a place with no one around, while he himself called his friends to teach Zhu Yu a lesson. So, Tang Jingrui chose that locust grove as the meeting point.

When Zhu Yu received Tang Jingrui's text, it could be imagined how happy he was. That night, Zhu Yu arrived punctually, only to find Tang Jingrui absent.

On the phone, Tang Jingrui told him that she was inside the grove and asked him to come in. At the same time, Hua Zhikang called Tang Jingrui, saying he had to attend an important project and couldn't make it, asking Tang Jingrui to mess with Zhu Yu a bit longer. In this way, Tang Jingrui used one phone to lead Zhu Yu deep into the grove.

Later, when Zhu Yu realized he had been deceived and questioned Tang Jingrui over the phone, she said it was a test of his courage, and that she would be there very soon. Of course, this was only a terrifying prank.

Chapter Three: The "Embrace" Before Death

The last phone call Zhu Yu made to Tang Jingrui was at 1:15 AM. Tang Jingrui told him about a murder case that happened three years ago.

A man killed a girl in the depths of the forest, and then used kite string to strangle himself. When people found them, the large kite, which was unusually large, had somehow come loose from the tree branch and was being carried by the strong winds, dragging the bodies along.

While Tang Jingrui was telling this story, there was no response on the other end of the phone. She suddenly felt afraid, worried that it wasn't Zhu Yu on the line anymore.

Even after hanging up the phone, Tang Jingrui didn't hear Zhu Yu speak a single word.

After achieving her goal, Tang Jingrui stood up satisfied and prepared to go to sleep. But as she turned around, she saw Zhu Yu standing on the balcony with a distressed expression on his face. His lips moved a few times, and then he jumped off.

Tang Jingrui's story ends there.

Feng Shi asked, "The person who appeared on the balcony last night was Zhu Yu, right?"

Tang Jingrui answered, "Yes."

“Why didn't you say anything at that time?”

Tang Jingrui's voice trembled, "That day, I felt that you were acting strangely. You seemed very familiar with the dormitory I lived in, and every action and expression of yours resembled someone else. The lines you sang before leaving, your voice and tone were exactly like his…"

Feng Shi fell silent all of a sudden, and Tang Jingrui didn't mention who that person was, and Feng Shi didn't ask.

The next evening, Feng Shi went to take over the night shift and saw that the school gate was wide open. Zhu Yu stood alone in the middle of the road. Feng Shi's heart sank, and he asked, "Why are you standing here all alone?"

Zhu Yu still didn't move and continued looking into the distance, softly saying, "Sending someone…"

"Who are you sending?"

Zhu Yu slowly turned his head, and Feng Shi was shocked to see that his pupils were almost completely dilated.

Zhu Yu murmured as if in a dream, "Sending me…and Tang Jingrui…"

Feng Shi's heart clenched. He checked the time on his watch and said, "Go back and rest."

Zhu Yu didn't even look at him, walked out of the school gate, and slowly disappeared into the darkness.

Feng Shi locked the gate and went into the security room to take out a magazine. Suddenly, an ambulance rushed in.

Feng Shi hurriedly opened the gate and heard a student next to him say that someone had gone crazy. Then he saw Tang Jingrui being brought in on a stretcher, her hair disheveled, eyes wide open, muttering to herself and not recognizing him at all.

Feng Shi sat in the dark all night, analyzing the events. The next morning at 7:30, the head of the school security team arrived with a new face. He told Feng Shi that Zhu Yu had been hit by a car and killed.

The security team leader lit a cigarette and said, "It's really damned strange. The ambulance was fine last night, but halfway there, that lunatic somehow undid the rope and insisted on sitting in the front passenger seat. At first, things seemed normal…"

He took a drag of his cigarette and continued, "But as they were only about two or three miles away from the hospital, that woman suddenly went crazy, stomping on the gas pedal with her foot and refusing to let go. Before the driver could react, the car jerked and hit someone - it was Zhu Yu. The driver stepped on the brakes, and that lunatic, without a seatbelt, flew out of the car like a ghost, with glass shards all over her face, a horrifying mess of blood and flesh."

Feng Shi was horrified by what he was hearing.

The security team leader licked his dry lips, glanced outside, then leaned in close to Feng Shi and whispered, "The scariest part is yet to come. When the female lunatic was thrown out of the driver's seat, she said a line from a play, and when she flew out, she landed right next to little Zhu. Both of their arms were stretched straight, and their hands reached out towards each other…“

The security team leader continued in a low voice near Feng Shi's ear, "Do you think they were trying to embrace each other before they died, or were they…trying to strangle each other?"

Feng Shi felt a chill run down his spine.

Chapter Four: The Ghostly Kite

The sky was ominously dark, as if it was about to rain.

Feng Shi, who had slept in until noon, left his house and boarded a public bus. He got off, then boarded another bus, then bought a map when he got off, and finally hailed a taxi. Feng Shi pointed to a location on the map for the driver.

Throughout the journey, Feng Shi kept his eyes squinted, not saying a word.

After getting off the taxi, Feng Shi stood still under a telephone pole, as if waiting for someone.

At 1:20 PM, a handsome young man with a backpack hurried towards him from a distance. Feng Shi stopped him.

The young man said, "I don't know you."

Feng Shi replied, "But you know Tang Jingrui, right? Hua Zhikang?"

Hua Zhikang looked astonished, "Who are you?"

Feng Shi smiled, and his voice suddenly turned sharp as he said, "Do you remember the murder case that happened three years ago on the outskirts of the west? I…” Suddenly, a thunderbolt struck down from the sky, drowning out Feng Shi's last words, but Hua Zhikang clearly heard them. His face turned pale, looking incredulous as he took a step back.

Suddenly, a large truck crashed into a telephone pole by the roadside, sparking a fire.

The power line above Hua Zhikang was pulled to its limit by the tilting pole, and one of the lines finally snapped, falling down from the sky and striking his neck. He was thrown two meters away, lying unconscious on the ground.

Feng Shi squinted his eyes, looked up at the sky, and got into a nearby taxi, leaving.

The horrifying events that followed were unknown to the public.

Three years ago, when Hua Zhikang had just started his freshman year, his only interests were chatting online and with the opposite sex, followed by eating, watching movies, and going to bed.

Until a woman he had a past relationship with came to find him, claiming to be pregnant with his child.

At that moment, Hua Zhikang had completely forgotten about this woman. He asked her to have an abortion, but she insisted on keeping the child. Hua Zhikang's response was to agree as long as she didn't bother him and let her have the child.

Two years went by, and just when Hua Zhikang was almost completely forgetting about the whole incident, the woman's husband appeared and discovered that the child was not his.

But he loved his wife and wanted to give the child back to Hua Zhikang. The father brought his daughter to the forest and told Hua Zhikang over the phone that if he didn't come, he would take the child to the school.

With a gloomy expression on his face, Hua Zhikang went into the forest.

At that moment, the father and daughter were running around the forest with a large, hideous kite in tow.

The two men had a falling out without exchanging many words, and in a fit of anger, Hua Zhikang kicked the girl aside, resentfully saying, "Since nobody wants her, let's kill her!"

The man quickly picked up the girl.

At that moment, as if possessed, Hua Zhikang picked up the kite string from the ground and suddenly strangled the man from behind. Two to three minutes later, the man was dead.

After resting for a while, he then used the string to strangle the girl.

Hua Zhikang's hands were shaking, but the grip only tightened as time passed.

Just as he felt the girl was about to take her last breath, she suddenly opened her eyes wide and stared at something behind Hua Zhikang. Startled, he turned to look, but there was nothing behind him except for oddly shaped locust trees and overgrown weeds.

The girl continued to stare straight ahead without moving. After a while, she finally uttered two words: "Mom…"

Hua Zhikang was taken aback, and quickly turned around to look, but there was nothing there, just the eerie trees and grass. When he turned back to the girl, he found that she had already passed away.

After a moment of calm, Hua Zhikang thought of burying the bodies. Just as he was about to stand up, the man who had been lying on the ground suddenly stood up and lunged towards him.

Shocked, Hua Zhikang jumped up, and when he steadied himself, he realized that it was the kite spinning the corpse from the ground and dragging it over two meters away.

Terrified, Hua Zhikang ran away and then remembered the phone call he had received. He mustered up the courage to go back and carefully retrieved the man's phone, then ran away as fast as he could.

Chapter Five: The Grove of Locust Trees

Soon, this once peaceful city was rocked by explosive news: a father and daughter had been brutally murdered in the outskirts, and the woman of the house had hung herself in their home.

The case had remained unsolved for three years.

Later, Hua Zhikang met Tang Jingrui, and the two quickly grew close. A year later, Zhu Yu fell in love with Tang Jingrui at first sight, and Hua Zhikang decided to teach this country bumpkin a lesson.

There seemed to be an unseen hand quietly orchestrating everything from the shadows.

That day, when Tang Jingrui called to tell him that she had invited Zhu Yu to the wild grove outside the west suburbs, Hua Zhikang had a foreboding feeling. He lied to Tang Jingrui and never showed up.

Now, let's talk about Zhu Yu.

From the moment he laid eyes on Tang Jingrui, he was completely infatuated. When he received her call, Zhu Yu saw a glimmer of hope.

Zhu Yu entered the forest, and before long, he saw Tang Jingrui. She was wearing a red dress and red shoes, walking silently into the forest.

Zhu Yu was overjoyed and hurried to catch up.

Strangely, although Tang Jingrui's steps seemed slow, Zhu Yu couldn't seem to catch up with her. Whenever Zhu Yu walked faster, she seemed to walk faster. When Zhu Yu got tired, she would slow down. Several times, Zhu Yu couldn't keep up and stopped to catch his breath. Tang Jingrui leaned against a tree, reaching out to touch the trunk, as if waiting for Zhu Yu to catch up.

Throughout the encounter, Tang Jingrui did not say a word or turn back.

The passionate and exciting secret encounter gradually gave way to exhaustion and growing suspicions, and Zhu Yu finally felt that something was not right.

But then, something strange happened.

Instinctively, Zhu Yu picked up the kite string lying on the ground and suddenly strangled the man from behind. Two to three minutes later, the man was dead.

Six, so that's how it is.

September 28th was the seventh day after Zhu Yu experienced that terrifying night, and also the third anniversary of the death of the woman and her family.

The whole day, Tang Jingrui was restless. She went to bed early and covered her head with a blanket.

After midnight, around 10 o'clock, her body shook for no reason and she woke up suddenly.

She heard footsteps in the corridor, someone wearing slippers, dragging them heavily on the floor. The footsteps continued, not from outside, but inside the dormitory!

Tang Jingrui quietly lifted the covers. She saw a tall man sitting on the lower bunk, striking a match repeatedly, crack... crack...

Tang Jingrui didn't dare to make a sound, listening alertly to the movements under the bed.

After a few minutes, she felt a hand touching her head. It was a woman's hand, very cold. The woman whispered softly in her ear, "Look at me, look at me..."

Tang Jingrui's cold sweat soaked the sheets.

Just when she was about to give up, the door of the dormitory was kicked open by a foot, a man ran in and dragged Tang Jingrui away.

It was Hua Zhikang, and Tang Jingrui held onto him tightly.

Hua Zhikang didn't say anything, just pulled her and ran outside.

They reached a low wall, Hua Zhikang climbed up and helped Tang Jingrui up. They both sat on the wall. Hua Zhikang brushed her hair back and said softly, "Jingrui, I knew you wouldn't lie to me."

Tang Jingrui felt something was wrong with his voice, and when she looked closely, she realized it wasn't Hua Zhikang at all, but Zhu Yu, looking like neither a human nor a ghost. She tried to break free from his grasp, but it was too late.

Zhu Yu dragged her, and both of them fell straight down.

As Tang Jingrui landed on the ground, Zhu Yu forcefully dragged her outside the school, with unbelievable strength.

When they passed the school gate, Tang Jingrui saw another vacant-eyed Zhu Yu standing there. Beside him was a puzzled Feng Shi.

She shouted for help to Feng Shi, but he seemed deaf to her pleas and showed no reaction.

As they left the school gate, Tang Jingrui took one last look at the two men and saw a woman in a red dress standing behind Feng Shi. The woman leaned closely against Feng Shi, with a blurred face, waving her hand slowly at Tang Jingrui.

She was bidding farewell to Tang Jingrui.

At 1:10 AM on September 28th, Tang Jingrui suddenly went insane.

According to other students in room 407 of Building 7, Tang Jingrui went to bed early that night. At midnight, she got up, put on a red dress, took a comb, and hummed quietly while combing her hair.

Suddenly, she stood up, shouting to open the balcony door and run out. Fortunately, her dorm mates stopped her and dialed 120.

Most things in this world are mundane, but once ripples appear, you will discover the complex mechanics behind the ordinary.

Feng Shi never liked Zhu Yu. He didn't like the way Zhu Yu bossed him around, or made decisions for him, like making him work the night shift. So, when Feng Shi noticed something wrong with Zhu Yu, relying on his rural experience, he thought Zhu Yu was either crazy or had lost his soul.

He knew that starting from September 21st, within seven days, if the soul did not return, the person who lost the soul would face a tragic fate.

He also knew that Tang Jingrui's madness was caused by her soul being led away in fear.

But he never knew there was something even more terrifying behind him.

So at the moment Zhu Yu was hit and killed, Feng Shi was no longer the same Feng Shi.

The next day, Feng Shi, or should we say another Feng Shi, found the already terrified Hua Zhikang. At that moment, he whispered in Hua Zhikang's ear, "My dear, our child and I have been waiting for you for three whole years..."

After Feng Shi disappeared in the western outskirts' locust tree forest with no sign of life or death, the security department hired two young guards who also liked listening to the radio. The radio often played some scenes from Yue opera, the deceased young actor chirping, "with a pure heart and a flower will become immortal... becoming a demon or a Buddha in an instant..."
